On Michigan’s Great Lakes, Freighters, or Bulk Carriers, are designed to carry up to 70,000 tons of raw materials from port to port, crucial for global trade. A 1,000 footer has the carrying capacity of 70 tons. It takes 700 Train cars to carry that size load or 2800 Semi Trucks. In terms of Energy Efficiency, The Great Lakes fleet is nearly 7 times more fuel efficient than trucks and 1.14 times more fuel efficient than rail. They are silent and beautiful as they traverse our much loved Great Lakes.
