My name is Mildred Sánchez, and I was born on the enchanting island of Puerto Rico. I began exploring the fascinating world of mosaic art in 2008. Over the years, I’ve learned various techniques including raised mosaics, glass-on-glass, micromosaics, fused glass, and mixed media. This piece highlights the Seagrape, a plant commonly found throughout the Caribbean. It often grows along the coastlines but is also used as an ornamental plant in gardens. Its grapes are small but sweet. In this work, I used glass, beach sand, and seed beads to form the grapes, and for a more natural and rustic-looking trunk, I incorporated flagstone (a smooth, flat rock). Through this process, I learned that not all pieces turn out exactly as the artist envisions. This work taught me to step out of my comfort zone, to improvise, and to go with the flow.
