Puerto Rico is home to four mangrove species native to the Caribbean: red mangrove, white mangrove, black mangrove and the button mangrove. Our largest mangrove is located on San Juan and is part of the Natural Reserve of the Pinones State Forest. Mangrove ecosystems are under constant threat from human activities such as logging, agriculture, and urbanization and make restoration efforts more difficult. The mangrove provides natural infrastructure to help protect nearby populated areas by reducing erosion and absorbing storm surge impacts during extreme weather events such as Hurricanes. Their dense roots help bind and build soil.
