Vermilion Sky is composed of hand-cut Italian and Mexican smalti, beads, and found elements gathered into a luminous field of color. Drawn to the expressive possibilities of mosaic, I use saturated hues, simplified forms, and richly textured materials to create work that exists between observation and imagination.
Warm vermilion, coral, and ochre tesserae are punctuated by turquoise accents that may suggest constellations, imagined landscapes, or treasured objects discovered over time. Rather than using mosaic to replicate an image, I am interested in what the medium can uniquely contribute: luminosity, texture, and the interaction of color across a surface. Through color, shape, and material, I invite viewers to discover their own connections among the assembled fragments.
