The art invites viewers to explore the underlying contradictions between Western and Eastern values as they relate to the humble cow.
In Western culture, the cow is often perceived passively-something seen in the distance, part of a field, or existing at other edge of our awareness. It is commonly associated with function, primarily as a source of food. This reduces the animal to its utility, shaping a relationship based on consumption rather than connection.
In contrast, Eastern cultures – particularly within Hindu tradition – view the cow as more than just an animal. It is an integral part of daily life, carrying deep spiritual, cultural, and emotional significance. The cow is revered, symbolizing life and harmony.
What makes the contrast compelling is not only the difference in treatment, but the difference in perception: in the West cows are viewed through a lens of function; in the East through a lens of meaning.
Ultimately, this artwork is less about the cow itself and more about humanity’s relationship with the living world. How does your perception shape value?
