When I decided to participate in this event, the Artemis II mission was traveling to the moon and inspired me to create a celestial piece: our sun. I wanted to create a trip to the sun and back.
The beauty of this piece is in the glass itself. This beautiful mouth blown sheet glass for the sun’s background brings you into outer space, as if you’re standing in the middle of a rose-pink streamer of a northern light.
Because the sun is always shining, whether we see it or not, the opalescent yellow glass stays bright without back lighting and has texture and color variations that make it appear to show surface movement of the sun’s gases.
The fence brings images of our normal world where we use fences to keep precious things in or dangerous things out. The fence in this piece is a reminder that it is useless trying to fence out the sun, the work needs to be done here on Earth.
While the border of the piece has the same color value as the background, it will bring the viewer back to the room they are standing in, possibly unexpectedly, as it shows an image of themselves or what’s behind them by this non-traditional usage of mirror in a back lit panel.
