The Cuban Tody is a small, vibrant, and charismatic bird, found only on the island of Cuba. This mosaic portrait is based on photographs taken while visiting Cuba on conservation trips in 2025 and 2026. I surrounded the bird with text from recent US newspaper articles about hardships of the current economic and political situation in Cuba. As much as we might want to focus on the beauty of Cuba, contentious and anti-humanitarian political maneuverings are the consistent backdrop. The bird’s perch seems more precarious as s/he considers this text and its ramifications.
