An Atlantic Puffin with a fresh catch of their favorite food, cold-water herring. Fifty years of effort resulted in the return and population stabilization of the Atlantic Puffin to their nesting grounds in the Gulf of Maine. Now, climate change and the rapidly rising temperatures in the Gulf of Maine threaten the populations of cold water fish such as the herring, a foundational food source, not just for the Atlantic Puffins, but all other seabirds and ocean mammals.
