Roller at First Light

The lilac-breasted roller is known for its vivid plumage—bands of turquoise, violet, rose, and deep blue that glow in shifting light. Native to sub-Saharan Africa, it moves between bursts of acrobatic flight and quiet stillness, often pausing to rest and observe.
This mosaic captures one such moment. Perched and turned toward the rising sun, the bird feels suspended in time—calm, alert, and fully present.
Each piece of glass follows the natural flow of feathers, creating layers that suggest both movement and softness. As light shifts across the surface, the colors deepen and change, echoing the bird’s brilliance.
A simplified, fractured background allows the figure to emerge, emphasizing the fleeting nature of the moment. In turning toward the light, the roller becomes a reflection on stillness, warmth, and quiet, luminous presence.
