One of my most persistent fascinations is with the wild variance of congruity in humans between our external and internal selves. So not surprisingly, my work is often an exploration of the relationship between that which is above and below a given surface. In this work the reds, which began as boldly glazed ceramic floor tile shards, have had some of their red glaze removed and the exposed rich rust claybody dyed black and gilded, creating a more mysterious surface and obscuring their interior. Similarly, the clear glass background pieces have an eye-catching texture and reflectivity but no color of their own. The black you see is the color of the cement mortar that holds the glass to the substrate.
