Wood turtle

2026
6″ x 6″
Glass, metal
$250

A wood turtle (Glyptemys insculpta) native to northeastern North America. This piece depicts the superficial turtle on the top plate and the bone structure on the bottom plate. Made with a combination of glass paint and etched flashed glass, the viewers are invited to view at various angles. The helix spiral is made with fused glass reticello rods and the egg at the top is an annealed cut off, discarded from the bottom of a glass vessel as it was being made. The figures practicing martial arts represent the disconnected observer.
This piece has been made as an experiment investigating the technical application of plating, etching, fusing, and painting in a restrained space to create a story exploring the tendency to dismantle nature for human observation and the gravity of being inattentive while doing so.
